Title: Small Suggestions Thread
Post by: Atomica on December 28, 2011, 05:54:09 pm
Here is a thread for everyone to post small suggestions that don't warrant their own topic.  :)

Starting us off, can we be able to move on our own topics?

Yes for the time being, but I don;t want to see abuse of it, like a ton of the MOVED topics for spam.

In the future I may make that permission for a certain membergrouo and above.

I'm terms of membergroups, I'm trying to think of good names.

Going with eviolite theme, I was thinking of pokemon, but I want to use them in a unique way, like Caterpie, to Zweilous, to Magneton, etc. Let me know what you guys think.

Dusclops should be the highest. =w=
But make it clever; like Dusclops Deity or Somethin', an alliteration.

Also, would it be cool if the Online/Offline indicator was active? I want to know if the person I'm talking to is actually there. xD

Hope Steel sees this but I thinking you should embed Xat chat into the site rather than having to alternate between 2 tabs.

With a Eviolite theme, higher user groups should be unevolved pokemon,  lower ones should be fully evolved pokemon.

Also, while I'm here, do you think it's possible to make Forum Games not count towards your Post Count?
Doesn't seem like a very "fair" way to buff your count if you're aren't giving anything to the forum itself.

With a Eviolite theme, higher user groups should be unevolved pokemon,  lower ones should be fully evolved pokemon.
Going with the unevolved-is-better theme, magikarp should be the top rank. Or possibly that should be the rank of the admins, but if you do that you'd want to put admin somewhere in the title icon thing.

And as for the board icons, no new posts should be porygon-2 (or z, or whatever), and new posts should be porygon.

And even if you don't go by that theme, it'd probably be a good idea to make new posts stand out from no new posts.

That's demeaning... Magikarp with Evio still sucks.
Using a unevolved mon that could actually utilize the item would make more sense, as it's based off of the Item and not the fact that they are unevolved.

Title: Re: Small Suggestions Thread
Post by: Arcade Sona Miku on December 29, 2011, 01:46:22 am
I understand what you guys mean by the idea of an eviolite theme having unevolved pokemon for higher ranks.

But personally, I don't like it.

Imagine starting out as Tyranitar and you work your way to a what, Lotad?

Also I don't like the New board icons for no new posts and new posts. I actually had to work out for myself which one represents which.
We need board icons that you can tell straight away if a board has new posts. PPN for example. A coloured pokeball that stands out for new posts. A dull pokeball that doesnt stand out for no new posts.

That's usually the logic behind board icons. Usually a no new posts icon, can be easily seen, but are usually dulled out, so you can see which boards have new posts, straight away

Can you make an alternate color scheme between the Porygon set we are using for the new post marker, like make one shiny and one not shiny, or one greyed out and one not.  I keep clicking a board thinking there are new posts.

Yep. I also think there should only be one pokemon for board icons. That pokemon would be greyed out on boards with no new posts, and in color on boards with new posts.

Also there is a way to untick the redirection topic being posted so it wont be spammy.

For now I think the normal board icons should suffice. Instead of Porygons. Unless someone does a recolor of a porygon to make it dull.

Either way I don't like Porygons very much.

Also, what happened the entire idea of the Eviolite theme?

On the list of smileys you see when posting a reply, there is no >:D smiley. Add et pl0x.

Also, the image that appears next to "My Messages" when you get a new message should have half the height and width of what it has now.
As it is now, when you get a new message, it makes the little shortcut menu look ugly because it has twice the height

Edit: Here is a cropped printscreen

Sorry about that, that's my fault i'll get working on that now.

Spam board pl0x
We are going to make a Spam Topic in forum games, I will also do that.

As with the Porygon/Porygon2 set up, I will fix it right now, but you can speak to jcb about what you would like to change it too

Edit: I fixed the Mail, and I fixed the icons. A Jumping shiny Porygon means unread topics, a regular porygon means read topics.

I'd really rather have an entire board for it, like in ludicom.

Title: Re: Small Suggestions Thread

A spam board would take too much away from the new forum development, it's a stretch even having the forum games board this earlier.  A spam topic will likely suffice and then the staff will discuss a potential board edition in the future but not now, it be too soon.

Title: Re: Small Suggestions Thread
Post by: Jcbklyn707 on December 29, 2011, 01:01:53 pm
How does everyone like the index icons? The animated shiny porygons is a great indication of unread posts vs the non-shiny still ones.

Spam Board - If we get enough demand for it, we will make it because I can see how members would want to create their own topics to spam in instead of a singular thread. Maybe a poll?

Censoring - at this time, there's nothing we can do about that

Ranks - will all be uneveolved pokes, the higher one will be the premier users of eviolite, lower ones won't be, to simulate an ascention in rank.

If there's anything I missed, please let me know.

If I may be so bold, I would like to suggest moving to a different host, such as ProBoards. They do not employ compulsory word censorship, and are the biggest forum host on the whole internet. The problem with all the SMFforfree variants is that they're owned by one person, to my knowledge, and they force their users to pay for ad-free to allow them to swear on their own forums. 'Tis terrible.

I'm fairly certain that Lcom had censoring allowed and Kloud didn't pay anything. I tried to make a forum through smfforfree at first, but for some reason the sign up link on the main page here: http://www.smfforfree.com/ made the forum as createaforum, which isn't the same thing. Fortunately I remembered Pokereal (yea that old thing) and saw that it was created on freesmfhosting, and it had none of the createaforum bs, so I made it here.

I did consider Proboards, but I have a lot of experience using SMF plus I like the look.

Sorry about the censoring though.

I'm not sure, maybe Steel might know.

That is true they always have some sort of hosting problems.

I don't understand this createaforum thing that happened.

if you really want Smfforfree instead of freesmfhosting. I think I can convert thegame forums into this.

Planning on creating a custom theme, but I want to figure out how to let you guys choose your own themes if that's possible. I'm going to work on that with Steel.

If the page is smaller, I could see more of the name, if I zoom the page, it gets cuts off, probably the same for you.

I'll merge it for now. If anyone has any ideas on how to revitalize that board, I'm open to ideas.

It's because it's not like PPN where you had new kids and other Pokemon lovers constantly coming in.
EDIT: Also we have no currency, which would make trading easier and give people an incentive to trade so they can use their money, we would have to make the gain of cash low though with this small community.

To add a store to the forum would cost money. Unless someone is actually willing to donate, it's a barter system for now I guess.

Checked, and no that is a paid feature.

I am thinking of creating a custom one, but that will take a while.

You didn't ask, but I'll suggest anyway. The top of the windows (Where the text is.) Could be glossy purple or black. I think a nice sunset background would be cool.

So most of the non child boards are active at the moment besides Creative Works, so we need to think of something to get creative works more active, otherwise is may merit just being a child board of something (Social maybe) :/

And for the price of that (or, rather, the package it's in) (http://evionet.freesmfhosting.com/upgrades.php), you could manually host SMF on rather overkill (right now) hosting.
Their cheapest monthly plan, which removes ads, costs $5/mo, which can get you pretty okay hosting.

I'm keeping the system the way it is, namely so we (the staff) can retain the ability to delete posts permanently (in case of a spambot, forum error/duplicate post, etc), and so the system wouldn't be used for no reason.

If someone really wanted their post to be removed for a specific reason, they can ask a staff member, but in most cases, if it's a mistake or something, one can just edit their post.

Woah, didn't realize they changed lol!

I had exchange the RS standard ones for the standard sprite from Pokemon Silver (that one was wierd) in combo with the BW animated shiny sprite, didn't work out.

The standard one now is from Platinum, the shiny is the same as before, from Emerald, needed to adjust it because the standard RS one was smaller than the shiny one.

Yellow madness still creeps me out, I don't think I ever really saw this:

I was doing some research on web hosting and it's

http://www.crazydomains.com.au/web-hosting/

like less then $3 a month for 25gb. This is australian obviously, find something cheaper in your area easily, I mean we can set up a homepage (before the forums, and once its on free hosting we can advertise it with google (not advertise it but if someone googles pokemon forums or something we could possibly be up there like PPN was. If I had some way of payment (I could figure one out) I'd be happy to pitch in like $10 to get started. Also I'd be happy to do the website as well :)

Porygon's evolutionary line fits with the Eviolite perfectly being both good users of it and having a good colour scheme to match.

Eevee just doesnt, it couldnt be further for the theme.  Even if there wasn't Porygon, there are still about a few hundred different options befor Eevee could be considered relating to the theme.

The facts are there, no need to dwell on this eevee thing any longer.  It won't happen because it can't happen without making a new forum.  And an eevee forum would be pretty unoriginal too tbh.

it isn't over powered
it gives a 50% boost to a non fully evolved pokemon (who's stats arent the best anyway) and gives them a bit of bulk so they can take a hit and be viable in the game to use on your team without evolving them.

Ohh okay, well with iPods and iPhones there is an app called Tapatalk, it's basically an app based forum. So everything is optimised of the forum into an app so you can use the forum on your iPhone/iPod. If you use the web browser on the iPhone/iPod everything is really zoomed out and you can't see anything and have to zoom in and it's a drag.

that's sort of what it looks like.

if it has the option of sending push notifications then it wouldnt work on older gens. also, idk if it matters if we are on free hosting, as long as the forum is compatible with it, it shoudl work... but yeah it would make sense that it wouldnt work with free hosting.
Trust me it matters a lot, the way you install the tapatalk thing is that you put the tapatalk folder into the forum folder (follow the instructions) where the forum stuff is and what not, when your on the free hosting you can't do any of that stuff because obviously your limited from that.

That's most likely horrible hosting. As is anything with that sort of deal.

When do I change rank name thingy... I have been a Eccentric Elgyem for 400 posts now :o Does it change at 1500? Or does it not change at all because you didn't make any because you thought no one would get this far xD Because it used to change like every 100-200 posts and now after 1000 it doesn't :(

As I said in the second sticky thread in Announcements regarding Ranks, there are 21 total. The first 10 ranks have relatively low post jumps betwen them, but after the 1000th post you will notice that it will take more posts to reach the next rank. I will not reveal exactly how many posts you need to reach the next rank.

The only two ranks you guys know of for sure are Rank 5 (149 posts) and Rank 8 (499 posts), namely because these are post benhmarks required for hidden board access.

Ahaha woo, you should have more of these competitions stuff and have some rules where you can only guess when someone else has guessed (therefore it doesn't turn out like that and how I posted like 8000 times xD)

next guess was going to be Eevee and Golbat won't evolve unless they are happy :P

At least he's got his avi and the same sig quotes.

But like Ian, changes to The Grim Reaper.
Someone asks who he is. He replies 'The Grim Reaper'.
Then, he gets sadface at Sammy -or Abby whatever, someone- for calling him Grim.

I'm not bitching that you change your name, it's just it takes some time to know who's who.. I didn't know Ian was grim reaper till then, was trying to figure out who it was. In terms of the pony child board, I'm not in favor of it. Creating multiple topics on that subject could be annoying to some members (and can be considered as spam).

As mentioned before, it's a mini-ToT, and just like the normal one it should not be hard to interact and talk in there. If you need to focus the thread a bit more t facilitate it better then that's what you need to do, but don't make multiple topics.

agreed... it shouldnt be a daily occurance.... different if you cahnge one word in your name as opposed to your entire name

We should have the option of adding our Skype and Steam to the profile too since atm it's only got ICQ, AIM, YIM and MSN; half of which noone even uses.

AOL owns the company who made ICQ...
So it's kinda pointless to have an ICQ. Just get AIM. XD

Yeah. It'd be good if we had like PSN and LiveTag and stuff like that because there is no effort looking through the ID thread when the front page hasn't been updated in so long (haven't checked in ages but it wasn't when I put my stuff in)

yeah back on ludicom there was a way for the admins to track the karma system, like they found out it was Nick Wiggs who was minusing loads of people so they blocked him from being able to use the karma system xD

it would be a cool thing to do to bring up activity in ways such as deciding what to talk about

Should be different categories, so like one category would be Forum Activity which would contain things like (most posts, best post, funniest post etc etc) then another could be, let's say a people's choice, which would contain things like funniest member, best new comer, etc etc which everyone would vote for. My point was (I started rambling) is you can only win one particular event in each category, to stop someone winning all the events (which is unlikely but yeah)

And then we could make little trophies for each event that you can put in your sig, yeah that'd be cool.

That's how it is.
Role Playing are text games.
Creative Works are whatever you do by yourself such as fanarts, fanfictions, original work, etc.

I haven't seen anyone posting fanfiction? I'd like to see some honestly. Original Stories also go in Creative Works right?
But what if someone decides to make a Fanfiction of their Role-play? RP board or Creative Works?

That's what I was thinking.

Say if someone makes a fan-fiction that is a spinoff of an existing RP.

I was thinking that it would be a good idea to rename the RolePlaying Board to the "RolePlaying and Fan-Fiction" board like it was on PPN.

CREATIVE.
I don't see why you guys can't see the difference?
The line is clear between the two.

But it would be related to an RP and make it easier to find for people Role-playing.

I read all the most recent threads of this board, plus this topic entirely.

About knowing who used Up-Grade or Dubious Disk on you, well I believe it might bias a bit the reputation system. Usually we are supposed to "Level Up" someone when they say something thoughtful for instance. If people can see who upgraded them, they will return the favour. However, it should not be a favour, because we're supposed to agree with the post, not the person.
And just as knowing someone downgraded you might lead to hostility, knowing your best friend didn't up-grade you might have the same effect. In the end, so that everyone is happy, everyone should upgrade everyone, and then bang! the reputation system lost its usefulness.
Also, I like the concept of Up-Grade and Dubious Disk :).

I also saw the Debate/Arguments board idea, I agree that it may lead to flaming. Debating is good for our mental health, but bad for a community and website.
Nevertheless, we could introduce debates without battles. I thought about two examples:
-A "Pro AND Con" thread; a debate subject is given, and every poster must give one argument for, and one against, the claim. Leading to neutrality. Then, others may refute someone else's argument, but then they have to give one fact that supports the argument, and another one that tries to counter it. The best way to learn to debate is to place yourself in the opposing party's shoes.
-A "Celebrity Debate" thread, where a controversial subject is given, and then we make a debate where each poster must write what a celebrity would think about it. It can be humorous, naturally. That would be the whole point, in fact. :D

About the Fan Fiction and Role-Playing idea, well I agree with Magoo; as Fan Fiction isn't role-playing, it belongs to Creative Works.
If we wanted to merge Fan Fiction with Role Playing, the sections should be for instance "Written Works" and "Visual Works". Unless Fan Fiction becomes so popular it needs its own board, but that seems not be the case for the time being.

About yearly trophy attribution, asking one sole person to determine the winners could lead to impartiality or friction between him/her or the members. I agree with the idea of a member vote, but then again it may become a popularity contest. Well it all has to do with how the community is tied,  have yet to learn about this :).

As the roleplaying mod, I guess it's time to put in a opinion that will hopefully have influence since that's my job

Now then, RPs do have creativity involved and can be a creative work, however since they have a special seperation they get their own board.  We need to stop thinking about it in terms of visual work and written work, but instead have it all as creative work except for RPs get their own board due to the larget aspect.  Remember a visual work like a drawing can essentially have more than one person involved on it but it's not a Roleplay.  A fanfic could be written by two people too but it's done in a different system to the RP (that system being the Biography system).  If two people are writing a fanfic together but in an RP style, they could use the RP board and then put in the creative works board when all the stuff is combined into one thing.
So the seperation is not written and visual, but more is not-rp and rp.

So I'd say that Fanfics should remain in the Creative Works board.  Not that Fanfics are popular here anyway unfortunately.  If they were, I'd love for everyone to try their hand and making them and then I would to since I love writing.

Ok so this is getting a bit rambly now since it's the morning and I'm tired, but my last point about this matter is that if it's a fanfic about a character from a Roleplay, it's still a fanfic and not done in the RP format.  It's all about the format and thus would go in the Creative Works board, but feel free to advertise it in the RP discussion threads.  We do want connectivity between all the boards, linking the forum together so everyone sees everything and be active.

So yes, everyone be active in all the boards!  We got two new signups yesterday so let's welcome them by being even more super forum than before.

I definitely agree with you, IV.
Creative Works is a place to showcase, share artworks of any kind, whereas Role Playing is for written games. I'll check our the RPs, I sure would like to join one, at least t try ;)

And I don't feel safe posting my genius ideas on the Internet. :P

This. Back at school I used to be one of the best writers, then someone stole my idea cause were discussing it and we got poo marks because it was virtually the same story (cept mine was told alot better and had a crap load less grammatical issues) ever since then i kinda stopped writing. And now I suck xD

Thank you for taking such concern in the board.  It's good to see a new member caring so much about the community ^_^

And I do agree with you.  I just don't like the fact that now I'll have to start going to the Creative Works board to write a Spinoff to my RP xP

@Aperl, I literally only just saw your slab of text xD I agree with most of it, although, in regards to the debate topic. I can't really see us getting to the point of flaming. We are generally pretty tight knit, and most of us don't usually get super angry unless trolling is involved *insert youstrollinboxxy.gif here*

The rep system I don't really have a problem with, it's be nice to have the trackin of Positive an Negative feedback though (like ppn did).

The trophy thing has to be a vote, but it can't be biased, like you said, but I don't really see anyone being overly biased, like for instance an award for most active member and we all vote for someone who has 100 post because "he's a cool guy and isn't afraid of anything"

Nonetheless, you deserved an upgrade xD

ah ok cool :)
what about a field for people to put the main username they want to be known as.  Cos I know when people change their username a lot to stuff, they still want to be known as the main thing.  For example some new members called me Rawr when I had that as the name, if it had a field for name, it might be easier to keep track of who is who and then they can be called by what they want to be called.

Title: Re: Small Suggestions Thread

THERE'S A CUSTOM TITLE FIELD AND A PERSONAL TEXT FIELD.
They both display under the avatar.
Why would we need ANOTHER field for that?
You can ALREADY input your username in THREE places.
The thing is 'Why do people feel the NEED to change their username?'
Just change the custom title and personal text dammit!

That's what I do. Ever saw someone complain about my username? No.

This is a stupid issue.
If you still want to be called by whichever username, WHY CHANGE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE?

As they could just change the Personal Text or Custom Title.

Hmmm, I've been thinking. Aryeh your always trying to organise a chat, be it on steam or somewhere else but there always at random dates and times so not as many people can join in, so I was thinking maybe you could organise, a weekly chat session where everyone agrees on a date and time, it might be difficult because of the time zones and what not but I think it would probably work better if we organised it before.

the karma badge is so stupid, our entire karma system is ruined.  It has no meaning now for you get tons just by upgrading someone.  I tested it by giving a point to my fellow mod Daniel but then I get a PM like right after (not even a miliseconds of time had passed) and boosh I'm up 20 points.

Ok so I changed the karma points awarded for the Good Karma badge from 20 (extremely high, agree with you all) down to 1. Apparently all the badges can have a set amount of karma points given to you when you get it, and apparently that one was set to 20 if yo give someone 1?

I also changed everyone karma points back to normal, for those who were given the extra 20 by the badge.

Did anyone else notice the update to the news section on the main page?  It alternates and fades between news updates.

Since the modship has recently doubled, anyone have any new suggestions?

It's a shame to say it but I think that maybe Comp Battling should become a sub-board in Pokémon Video Games as it's not too active and if he have one less main board it's a bit less scrolling.  And if it got tons of activity we could make it bigger again but atm maybe it should be a sub.  Your thoughts people?

I think you should get rid of the admin approval thing, now that kloud and kinfin are probably long gone.
It really barriers new members imo.

Anybody agree?

Can the mods at least to the approval?

Title: Re: Small Suggestions Thread

I'm divided about this.

On one side, Admin approval reduces the likeliness of having bots or spammers.
But on the other hand, people waiting for approval are more likely to leave.

I would keep it this way, though.

Not to my knowledge.

Though I do think it's a good idea, might help with getting new members and any bots/trolls that get through could easily be moderated.

Atleast mods should be able to approve.

I agree about that we don't need the aproval thing.  A person should be allowed to join right away and not wait because that will motivate them to be posting and such.  Besides if some spammer shows up, us mods can handle them.  So there is more pros than cons to have aproval removed.

Remove it I think, I remember when I got the approval email I was sort of like "Meh, I'll have a look anyway". Lucky I did, but I was very close to not joining because I didn't want to wait.

I really wanted to help the fourm, and I have been trying extremely hard.
If you guys don't think I am tell me.
I really dislike the fact that my requests are ignored by JCB, any message or anything I said him was just a waste of time.
I feel like anything I do on the site is wasted effort.
I don't hate JCB, but alot of things hes been doing recently have been making me want to leave or just give up on helping, its really emotivating for helping a site the admin doesn't want you to help you with.
Thats honesty.
If my post is removed, I'm reposting it. You can ban me if you like, but nothing here is breaking any rules.
I don't want to see this place die, and I have done as much as I possibly can. I truly doubt JCB will read this either.

yeah the member approval just makes us look bad.  How can we advertise to other sites and then they can't do anything until later :/

I do read everything you send Steel, it's just when you send me over 20 pms in such a short period of time, it gets a bit tiring after a while.

I've already made my stance clear on previous queries made regarding admin powers, and now we have one again. As I discussed with the mods, I am keeping the registration approval in place. I know from experience that this forum does get its share of spambots, all of which I manage to delete with the aid of this measure. I have multiple registration checks in place, and I check the IP of every new member against a confirmed bot database I use, so trust me when I say I am on top of it. Not to mention if I give the power of managing registration, it also includes other admin powers like deleting members altogether at the same time, which I will not allow.

I can administrate this forum just fine, I understand that you may think that the forum isn't all that it can be, I'm sorry for that, and if you want to help promote the forum a by using a few external meaures that's perfectly fine, but we are, and probably will always be a small community. I have already given the moderators clear instructions on how to present new projects and ideas to me, like hosting, with a clear outline, so like I told them, if you are seriously planning on doing something big for the forum it needs to be well thought out and planned for.

I do not appreciate getting random suggestions and ideas flooded to my mailbox every 12 hours, especially in a such an insisting and derogatory tone. If you have a specific project you want to bring up in the future, discuss it with a mod and be sure that they post it in the staff board for me to review. In fact, I'll post the same outline I gave them here so you guys have an idea of how I want ideas presented to me in the future.

I don't send you over 20pm in such a short period of time, so don't word it out like I am the bad one who spams you, I count each PM I send, and I sent 4-5 with the knowledge that you where online and posting. Maybe a short response would help someone know you /are/ reading their pms. If they where in a bad tone, it wasn't intended.

Also we have a well thought-out plan that I'm sure someone must have posted to you.
We want to advertise on Reddit, Sato got approval from the /r/pokemon board, but to do that we need no admin approval, or a more open admin approval. It would look bad if the approval was still there.
We made this site as a community, I strongly think we should work together as a community. I know the final decision is up to you, but you should at least take into account that we helped you make the forum, and we only want to help you make it stronger.
Some like Evionet as a small community, but are you honestly telling me this isn't a bit too small?

I feel like because I'm just a regular member that I have no say in your business, which isn't the reason why we made Evionet. I just didn't want my say to be looked over and ignored, or just simply shut down without consideration. This goes for other members too, they should also have a say. I can never talk to you up front and it makes me feel useless, but if I am useless then I think I should just see my way out of this and let you handle your forum the way you want to.

If we as a community work together to improve the site than we can. We don't 100% want a second admin or anything but we want an admin who works with the rest of us, its the next step to helping evionet become more like PPN or at least somewhat more active.

The reason I make these huge posts is because I feel like I can rarely ever talk to you, and its a barrier to all of us that shouldn't be there. I hope I'm not alone in my points.

All we want is you to remove the admin approval, it pushes away people would otherwise join, as far as spam bots go the mods can handle a few of them, it's not like we'll get flooded with them.

That's the thing though, Zohaib is trying to help the forum, he's sending those messages because he cares and can't do it himself, none of us can do it ourselves without your approval, that's what getting people frustrated when it was them that worked to together to make that community.

Zohaib is just saying what he thinks would help the forum.  If you think the idea isn't very good, then ok you're in charge, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't take his future ideas into consideration.

Evionet's original purpose did include it being community run and democratic so we do as a whole need to be allowed imput as a community as opposed to the whole thing resting on your back.  Zohaib has been trying to help sincerely and I hope there can be more co-operation between 110% of everyone.

I mean to say over 10 in my original message (typo), in addition to the ones you've sent through the mods.

You want to advertose on Reddit, that's great, but that has no direct correlation to registration settings. I am getting tired of the repeated of notion of handing out admin powers, especially when I have already explained why it's not feasible in every aspect. If someone signs up, they can wait a while, it won't take more than 24 hours guaranteed, and they'll get an email when it's approved.

We made Evionet because we were left with no home after Ludicom's closure, I stepped up and created this forum in Ludicom's wake to make a permanent place for this community leftover from PPN (and yes we are very small compared to what we used to be). I made a promise to not repeat the mistakes of the past and maintain a stable forum and safe home here, that is my primary focus and has always been. In terms of expanding and getting new members, that's what I have the moderators for. I chose them primarily because they are very socible and active members and they make the perfect ambassadors to represent the forum outside. I'm glad you are looking for external offers, and I am still here. The moderators have direct access to me and wheneverthey need my advice or help from now on, I am a reply away.

I need to make this also clear, I am not online 24 hours a day. I work, I go to college, I have a life. However, I have made a committment to log in every day, at least twice a day, and to check the staff boards primarily for any notices from the mods, so seriously the best way t contact me is through them. It is also better so you can double check your proposa to make sure everything is in order. Multiple pms is not an attractive option.

We get that you aren't here all the time which is why we think we should have more responsibility in being able to get things done.  The things Evionet was meant to rectify that previous incarnations didnt have was more democracy and community decision making, that was brought up in that original xat chat many times.  We aren't saying you must make another admin, but the community as a whole does need to be able to do things as a majority to be able to sustain itself and move forward.

Things that need admin attention don't happen every second or every hour or even every couple of hours, I am fully capable of administrating this forum effectively and making final input and decisions on suggestions the community or specific members make. All I ask is that all proposals be presented in an organized manner, and that the mods make use of the staff board in presenting such ideas to me. If you guys can handle that then maybe we can actually move forward.

How is disabling admin approval handing out admin powers exactly?

The power to manage registration is also tied with the power to delete accounts, all concerning admin powers are listed under one permission and therefore I cannot hand it down.

Why don't you remove the permission all together.
We don't need it.
This is the biggest obstacle we need, and in skype and steam, we have agreed that without it being gone, we can't advertise.
It's a barrier.

And don't say you can't, I ran an SMF forum and I could remove that.

If you really want me to, I will make an organized post about it to you in another thread. I don't see the point in it because you already know, and we have explained our main reason.

This seems a bit harsh really.  We can handle things but you don't seem to be allowing us to.  It's supposed to be the community working together and expanding but we can't grow if you say no to what the majority think we should do to get things working better. :/

As I have told you guys already, you signed up for a very specific job, to moderate the forum, and you know exactly what that entails becuse I have explained that to you multiple times. The only thing I am not allowing you guys to do is administrate the forum, which you are not. Needless to say, I created this forum, so it is ultimately my decision what major actions need to be made within my domain of action. I am not being unreasonable here. So once I've said no to something, I mean it. I do not deny proposals as a personal insult to anyone, if something is not feasile it's just not going to happen. In this situation, I have explained myself in every aspect and laid out my future expectations clearly.

It looks bad to join a site that you have to wait to join.

Also what you stated in the post to aryeh is very rude and uncalled for.

You didn't create this forum. We made it as a community decision in a time of need. Your just claiming it for yourself because you physically made the forum on this host.
Remember who helped make your topics and boards, alright?
Without us there would have been no evionet, so do not act like you are some all powerful king, and the mods are just hired to do your bidding.
We elected you as an admin in that chatbox, so do not act like everything is yours and to be rude to your moderators, acting like some insane power freak.
Its out of line, and you have to look at it.
You didn't want to be like our past admins, and do the same mistakes, well look at yourself, You Are making the same mistakes, as much as you do not want to believe it.
Your being extremely unfair to the moderators and members who only want to help you. Your just trying to take total control of a situation you weren't there to experience.

You really need to stop saying that its your forum. It's only your forum because of our choice, and I personally regret it.

In the end this has to be a democracy based on the community's overall decisions, it can't rest on the shoulders of one person based on delegation nomatter what happens because that creates a diseconomy of scale.

@JCB

I'm tired of nothing happening, I love this community and all the people in it and it's sad watching it fall apart do a lot of inaction, and that inaction is your fault, the mods have presented a lot ideas to you and you've shot them all down, and they can't do anything without you're approval, now I realize that we'll always be a pretty small community, but that doesn't stop us from advertising and trying to get bigger, and admin approval does affect advertising, it makes the forum look unprofessional.

I've already explained why removing the registration approval is a necessity though, and the record you were also asking for giving the mods the power over approval.

I'm just getting tired of the constant insisting of changing something after I have already denied it, and given completely viable explanations as to why.

We don't like the denial, it is our forum as much as it is yours. Why do you deny what the community wants.
You think that I don't care for the community?
I wouldn't be here, fighting this for like the past few weeks, helping get activity, notifying people like Eric The Turtlemaster about Evionet, constant mass postings, if I hated the forum.
You shouldn't act like the total boss of things, you should realize that we made Evionet for the community. Not for you.
What the community says should go, if it is bad, then we learn our lesson, do we not?
I don't expect the community to always agree with me, I understand now that the multiple admins thing was bad.
But we wanted the registration approval gone
It is not a necessity in anyway. If it was than PPN, Ludicom, TheGame, Drapionet would have it.

Do not think I'm going to give in just yet, I will fight for this community till the end. I may have given up before and dissapointed many, but I learned from that, and I hope I will not repeat it.

I'm not doing this for me.
I'm doing this for people like Aryeh, Milky, Chaos and everyone else who cares for the forum. I don't care if they fight with me or not, I know that they still care for the forum and every suggestion is in good intentions.

The mods have explained over and over that they do not enjoy how you treat them, thinking they can do something when they can't.
And don't get mad at them for me quoting posts they showed me or anything. It's not their fault and I take responsibility. If you signed up for skype or steam or tried to communicate properly with the moderators maybe you would know the situation better.

Look at what your doing. Repeat of the last times this community took a hard hit. This could be easily avoided if you had a rational agreement with the community. You accept some of our needs/wants, and we might accept yours. This isn't being unfair in my wording. It is 1 against many. It shouldn't be that way. It should be many vs getting activity up and supporting the site.

Because it's not a good explanation, plenty of very popular forums do not have registration approval, we are very small, we aren't some high profile community like NeoGaf that needs registration approval.
Keeping out spam bots, that's what mods are for.

Copied from the staff board
People stopped joining PPN because TimF stopped accepting members altogether, and he himself put the measure in place beforehand for the exact same reasons I did, and Kloud before me. It's not that I don't trust you guys, you have the powers that you need to do the jobs that you signed up for, moderate the forum. If you guys want to do extra things to help promote the forum, that's great, but you shouldn't forget your primary jobs are to 1. monitor posts and member activity and 2. mediate situations when needed (Step 1 - Move posts, Step 2 - PM member/s, Step 3 Post actions here when they require my attention and action).

If any moderator wants to resign, they can just like you did Steel. The moderators can ontact me at anytime through the staff board, thershould b no reason why they shouldn't.

I don't always expect you or the community or the moderators to agree with me either, but the stimple fact is that I am the administrator and that is not going to change, and my decisions are final. I am open to all suggestions, but when I deny them it's for a very good reason.

Your only admin because of our decision. You really should listen to us, we all want the acitivty and we only ask of you to get rid of the admin approval.
If you can give me 1 good reason that doesn't involve spam bots or bad people [stuff that mods should deal with] for defending admin approval, then I will stop.
We need the admin approval gone, why does it have to be a big deal, why can't you just listen to us and get rid of it.
You have to understand your not the boss. You never where. We are the community. Without us you would not be in position you are today.
You have so far denied all of our suggestions and this stops all of our motivation from continuing bringing activity.

Your the administrator yes, and that may not change. But you where once the JCB I voted for administrator, and after today I have lost all respect I had for you.
You promised to not repeat any mistakes and to listen to us, this was a group effort.
You have turned this into your forum.
That has crushed all my respect for you.

You may not realize it but we need the activity and we have this barrier. This barrier causes more problems than it solves.
It stops us from advertising, nobody will want to join a forum that is so scared of handling spambots and bad people.
It is a wall stopping us from doing what we can to prevent problems.

I left my trust in you, and you have not proved trustworthy.
You should trust your staff to defend the forum from these attacks.
You should trust your community in advertising and getting this forum out of the dark hole that it's in.

This admin approval thing is more than just a physical barrier stopping us from advertising and helping the community.
It's proof that the mods are not be trusted handling a few bots.

You can say that "its not that I don't trust you guys" but you don't physically show it.
We need this barrier gone to keep doing what we love, and its helping the forum.

How about we reach a middle ground.

I will lift the approval for a trial period of 1 month starting today. The only condition I have is that the moderators revuew each new member for possible bot for me to review and I'll go through the outline with them. If we have no major incident within the trial period, I'll lift the approval.

What do I consider a major incident?
A. A spambot/topic/post remains unchecked, meaning by the time I get on I do not expect to see spam posts outside of the deleted messages board. And I expect a report from a moderator in the staff board, so immediate action can be taken.

This will obviously be more work on the moderators, for if a new member does decide to spamthey have to be on top of it, and I'll do my best to be on as much as possible in case deletion is needed. I hired 4 moderators also with the intention they can be on at different times, so they can catch such things.

This is essentially how things were prior to the Kinfin incident, needleess to say it has prevented a lot of spambots from coming on the forum and flasely increasing our member count and prevented other incidents from getting widespread. I just wanted to keep the forum clean and make the primary responsibility of dealing with this on my own.

Anyway, how does that sound?

Thats fine, I'm happy we came to an agreement.

I do hope everything turns out well.  I have expressed my concerns clearly, but if you guys feel that they are not going to be an issue, I'll lift the approval now as I promised.

I don't want any of the other things I said to be forgotten either, I don't want my mods to feel excluded or any member to not get their voice through to me. They know that they can post in the staff board at any time, but when they don't tell me everything they want to say, how can I help then?

And I have not forgotten what you have said either, about we all being a community. Maybe if you guys ran a poll amojngst the other members as well, it would have shown me a more democrati standpoint. As the admin of this forum, I have a hig expectation of how I want ideas to be presented to me so that we can move forward together, for instance I would like to hear these proposals from my mods first if it concerns a mjor change like this, and preferably outlined. A forum is a hierarchy, shown in multiple ways through post counts and moving up in class, fom Admin to Moderator to Regular Member.  Every member can say what they want, which is why none of you did anything wrong here. There are rules in place however, and a system setup for whe you want your voice heard so we can work together. Will everything happen all in one day, and to evry members pleasing? Of course not, that is not how it works in real life either, but be assured that everything that I do, and the moderators, is for this forums stability.

Growth will take time if you guys give it the effort. Simply maintaining high posting activity goes a long way. Think about Pokemon X and Y, the more content you post on it, the more searches we get, and that is visible through guest numbers and topic views. Since you guys feel that removing the approval will be an incentive for new members, I hope this actually turns out well for your advertising efforts.

More polls that people will vote in is definitely a good idea and I say be begin planning topics of discussion for us to make polls about so everyone gets in their view points as to how we work as a forum.

JCB, do you know why a theme didn't work when you first tried to install one? Because if creating a theme involves simple CSS editing, I'm more than happy to do that to give the site a more XY appropriate look.

Also, we appreciate all the stuff you've started doing, the new logo, the site main page, etc. It's really pimping out the forum :P

Yes! The bottom set is definitely better.

Although, for the "no new posts" one, I think it looks too dark, how about this: (http://i.imgur.com/JQvV9.png)

Like how google kinda does it.

For example, give the banner a red hue and put hearts on it and luvdiscs for valentines day.

The middle banner thing could be fixed if someone could add in invisible endings to it to give it the illusion of a centerized banner.

We could stick to standard holidays at first. You guyscan make a thread for new banner submissions for holidays, make a list in the OP, and update it when you get the banners.

Bad idea.
On a mobile or a PC it wouldn't work.
And even from a 1024x768 display to a 1920x1080 one the banner would NEVER look centered.
It would look awkward at best.
If there's no script that works, there's no way at all.

if only that would work with everyone. On the computer I'm using right now, the banner actually runs a little off screen. On my computer at home, the banner fills 4/5 of the top screen. Center the banner on one screen, and it will run off another screen and not be centered on another.

If I'd seen that we wanted a valentine's day banner earlier, I definitely could have made one quickly. If you still want one I can make it when I get home today. I'll start thinking of some ideas for other banners as well.

I don't want to see any more hearts please go the fuck home. XD

Luvdisc would have been nice though.
Maybe it could be an era kinda thing. Like just change the Pokemon appearing around the Evionet banner.

Also, I kinda feel like the silhouettes in the banner are out of place. The way they're at equal distance from one another doesn't feel natural. I would either rearrange them or simply remove them. Having Yveltal and Xerneas is enough tbh.

I use the system sparingly.  If I see a post that I think either makes a good point or is really funny I up-grade.  If I see a post that I have a problem with, I dubious disk.

And how can people dislike more than they like if most members have 10+ Karma?

I actually like the blue text.
the colour is nice but it is a bit faded in and having it visible is more important than that

It's good, but it's a little bold imo.

I really liked the blue background, though :\

The quotebox-green is too dark to see the text on it. :c

Sorry for the crash on the theme, had to rework the CSS code, I'm going to try and get the text back to black.

The quote background should be better now.

I've tried that, it seems that whenever you go on Look and Layout Preferences in your profile, selecting the SMF Default theme doesn't do anything.

I'll fix the Staff List.

If anyone can find a good pokemon related background, to replace the bubbles, you can post it here.

I'll try the text again.

It appears only as blue to me.

Are you guys fine with the background? If anyone wants to make a custom one we could try that.

I'm still trying to find other text colors in the code and turn them to black.

I don't really like the background.
The texture in the headers/sections is good.
Colors are nice, the gradient in quotes is cool.

I'll look for a background too.
If anyone finds a cool one that needs working, I can do.
For example: Awesome background but it's pink, I'll make it blue.

I could probably make a background too if you guys have a cool pattern or something.

If you would like to make a background image that would be great.

This is the image that is currently being used for reference:

The pattern repeats itself in the background.

I still need to get used to the black font (yet I don't remember what the old colour was), but it's fitting well.

It's a fancy fade effect, I quite like it.

Though, it would be nice if there was a way to make the blue at the end more distinguishable from the blue on the rest of the page.

I see it now, like a small tint of white on the left side

I think it's an image in the quote background, I would have to put another image for that.

EDIT: I think this is the culprit:

With the Smogon Overused Tier Metagame settled down, a few noteworthy changes have occured this month in the lower tiers. Nidoqueen has risen up to UU after wreaking havok in RU, while several RU pokemon have fallen to NU (i.e. Scolipede, Primeape & Munchlax). Jynx has also brought back into NU with these new drops. For teh full tier lists and competitive battling clauses, visit our Smogon Metagame thread!
Just reporting a couple typos I noticed on the Homepage :P

Also JCB, as a suggestion. I can help by making a Pokemon of the week topic for voting, and I can help with chosing the topic of the week, every week.

I'm reliable for that stuff, since I'm on evionet daily, and I can set reminders.

That sounds great, I believe Daniel was working on the Topic of the Week, maybe you guys can split the work on that?

When you have Pokemon of the Week set up, you can post it in the new sticky thread I made, or if you want to make a topic and update it every week, I can add the hyperlink and update the pokemon picture on the home page that leads to your topic.

Thanks. It's on Photoshop too. Never learned about it in my 3 years at college---!

I kind of like your background but it's still too clear to me...
I'm thinking of maybe blurrier as to fade more as a background instead of now.
It's kinda competing with the other elements on the page. But a background should be smoother and the focus should be on everything but the bg.
I made this from yours like real fast, not the best but maybe you could work in that sense?
Do you understand what I mean?

The banner is good. I think it's better without the Porygon behind it.
Cause there are enough elements as is. ENOUGH WITH THE PORYGON! XP

XP
oooh
jcb try that one, i want to see how it looks on the whole site. It gives a cool depth of field effect to the site.

I just wanted to point out that most of the Jump to... links work, however the sections themselves, such as Pokemon Boards, Information Center and such still link to the home page.
I must be one of the rare people who ever click these links. I use them because they scroll automatically to the section I'm looking for.

Otherwise everything is awesome ;D

Well I noticed that the link to the homepage is
http://evionet.freesmfhosting.com/index.php?
Which used to be the main forum page. Now, that one is:
http://evionet.freesmfhosting.com/index.php?action=forum

So the links in the Jump to... are giving the URL
http://evionet.freesmfhosting.com/index.php#X
Where X is the board number. It must just be changed by
http://evionet.freesmfhosting.com/index.php?action=forum#X

I don't know if it's necessarily that simple, though.

Secured HTTP on Youtube won't display the video in the post.
It will appear as a link instead.

Just a heads up.

Youtube links won't appear as a video if it's a secured HTTP.
So just remove the 's' in 'https'. The link remains the same and will then appear as a video on the forum.
Dunno if this can be fixed by the admin though...

So maybe you could look into it when you have the time.

Is there a way to add spoiler tags now?
Cause I just tried my old way of spoilers with the glow tags:
Code:
[glow=black,2,300]She dies at the end.[/glow]

She dies at the end.

But as you can see, since the text is a deep blue, you can read the spoiler.
And when I enter a color in the tags, using one of the colors in the 'Change Color' drop-down menu, there is only Blue and Navy and it is neither of these blue.

Try this:

By the way if Jack Skellington sees this message, it's Ninetales, not Ninetails.
Actually I have a Pokemon guide (1st gen) where it's written Ninetails at one place, but Ninetales everywhere else. Even the pros make that mistake ^^.

Also, I still need a huge bunch of posts before I can enter the top 10...
Could it be a top 1000 instead? I'd stand a chance ^^.

This is the first time photobucket had ever done this crap to me. I'm pretty angry about it. I have no idea why it's doing that; the image is still viewable in my library. I can't do much until at least a couple hours, maybe days since I'm out of state. I guess I'll have to make a new account on Photobucket.

I've written new articles for pokemon of the week and question of the week.
It hasn't been updated in forever.

The news isn't my responsibility. I'll go ahead and write it but why should I have to do everything.
I'm not the article writer. I'm not even a mod.

Once again, lack of support, I feel like I have to do everything on my own here.
I get I'm the one complaining, but I'm sure im not the only one that wants activity back.

Pokemon of the Week and Question of the Week are not articles. They're simply questions/copypastas. That's not a text.

Nobody is the article writer. As Jcb is the Admin, we just assumed that responsibility was meant to fall on his shoulders. Do you think the director of every newspaper is the one writing articles? No. There are people who ask him to publish their texts. This is how things work. So if what you suggest is not done, don't complain.

There are people who say things and get other people to sign their Facebook petitions, and therer are people who actually do things. Which kind of person are you?
I'm personally a doer, I'm working several hours a day on writing programming lessons for people who stopped caring the very day they joined. I'm not going to fight against that. But I keep doing.

There is no lack of support. You're asking people to do what you want, and all you suggest to do yourself is post more. And by the way mass-reviving dozens of topics without actually participating is once again telling everyone to do the job while you take it easy.

I'm always writing more than you do, so don't think you've done more work than everyone. I've done more work disproving your arguments than you've done writing them.

You said that you made the Twitter account, but someone else was "in charge". And when you saw nothing was happening, did you take appropriate measures so that news would be there on time? Nope. Evionet's Twitter died within days. Same can be said about any kind of contest or project that has been started.

Stop saying, stop suggesting, stop complaining, and actually do something. But is it too much to ask, wanting you to do what you wanted others to?

Rosim stop being so freaking cynical about everything, and how about you actually pay attention to what I do instead of criticizing everything.

I'm not going to go out and say "I did this" and "I did that", because I don't want to seem like some **** who takes credit for everything.
I don't think you remember, but last I checked it was me who talked to JCB about the forum's situation and not you.
It was me who talked to JCB about the mods situation and not you.

I created the Evionet Twitter. I bumped a bunch of topics. I tried to rally support for everyone to pitch in and help.

But what the hell? Is that not enough? Do you want me to post every single tweet? While I post a bunch of replies to myself, and then tell myself to keep doing it?

The reason why I quit every single time is because of people like you. Unappreciative of everything I do, not noticing that I'm trying to help you people and not do this for my benefit.

And so what if you write more? Does that automatically make you the genius of the world? A man who can make his point in fewer words is more efficient than the man who has to write a novel to express half of his thoughts.

Mag is right, It's not my responsibility to care for the site. I'm not the admin. I'm not a mod. I'm just a member, like you. I have no significant power over anybody. But I try to rally up support for people to do things.
For example, I suggested that the site needed some visual change.
I suggested to James to go ahead with a Pokemon LP to advertise the site.
Sato suggested he could post on reddit, and I supported him.

I don't like blaming everything on JCB, and I try not to, infact I prefer I don't as it stirs uneeded tension. But it's the role of an Admin to care for the site. If I had a complaint at work, I'd take it to the head of the office, or atleast his secretary.
He may not have to write articles, but does he have anyone do it for him? He has to input the text that somebody wrote into the main page. Like it or not, hes the middleman, and there is no changing it unless someone else is given access to the front page's customization features.

I'm not asking for people to do everything for me, if whoever reading this takes what I say as, I just ask for a little help.

Rosim, you can be cynical and rude all you want, but you have to remember. I don't HAVE to do anything. I don't HAVE any responsibility. I do it because I WANT to help the site.

As we're discussing that over Skype, I won't add anything. I've reported a post of this conversation (not being able to report mine). I've already done too much harm. :/
Well fought, though. Brilliant.
I'm still not sure that all what you suggest will end up being the recipe for new members, but hey, you've proved to everyone the reasoning behind your intentions. Doesn't it feel good from time to time to just write everything?

EDIT: No sarcasm intended, seriously.
