Title: Quick Competitive Questions Thread
Post by: REECHEE on January 22, 2012, 09:51:44 pm
Need to know what set you should run on a Pokemon?

How about what egg moves a Pokemon learns and with what?

Ask away, those questions are meant to be answered in this thread; as I know there are people who are glad to help.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Now, my first question: What Egg moves does Houndour learn and what are the fathers? xD

Note: Don't post if the egg move is just stupid like Oder Sleuth or Bite.

Houndoom - its only noteworthy egg move is Pursuit (can be received through Smeargle)

Other important moves are 4th gen exclusive (Dark Pulse, Sucker Punch)

Why is Heracross able to learn Bulk Up in Gen 4 but not in Gen 5?

My thoughts exactly.

In Gen 4 games, Heracross can learn Bulk Up by TM, but in Black and White it's unable to learn it.

Does she learn any egg moves worth having? :3

QUESTIONS!

Dream World Vulpix/Ninetales have Drought as their ability to summon permanent sunlight, with it you can abuse boosted Fire attacks and no charge Solarbeam.

Egg Moves: Hypnosis, Heat Wave (for doubles/triples).
Lesser extent ones - Power Swap (Overheat combo, gimmicky), Disable, and Hex.

All egg moves available through Smeargle.

Okay, this has been bugging me lately, so, Foul Play does higher damage depending on the other Pokemon's attack. So is the user's attack effect the damage, or is it's 95 base indefinite?

It's a 95 base power move, that is definite.

The target's attack stat, and not the user's, is used in damage calculation. The target's stat boosts and any abilities that affect the Attack stat are incorporated into the calculation. The user's items affect the damage calculation (i.e. Choice Band, Muscle Band, etc). If the user has STAB (Dark type users), it is factored in. If the user is burned, it is factored in. If the user has an ability that does not affect the Attack stat but does affect damage output, such as Adaptability, it is factored in.

first question, it depends on the EV distribution that any of the mons have
second, Salamence gets Hydro Pump as an Egg Move from Kingdra, Gyrados or Milotic

Ok, gonna have a lot of questions here, but lets just take it one at a time...

So, I'm making an Offensive Rhyperior, I know what EVs I need for it, already got the right nature, and have most of it's moveset planned out: Earthquake, Stone Edge, and Megahorn, but I need one more move that's good for coverage or something, but I was a dumbass and decided not to breed it in Gen IV, so no Aqua Tail unfortunately. Also I need an item for it too, but I don't want to have a Choice Item on it. Any suggestions?

Substitute if Adamant, Rock Polish if Jolly.

Rock Blast is also somewhat more reliable than Stone Edge.

Alright, so if you fully EV train a pokemon when it's not at Level 100, but then get it up to level 100, will it still have the bonuses that you need?

once it's got all the EVs filled to 510 then it wont gain anymore so you can level it up to 100 and it wont mess up

So it will get the stat boosts at for ever 4 EVs when it reaches Lv 100 even if it was EV trained earlier?

yes
in fact it has to be lv100 in order for all the stat boosts to be shown to their full potential since you wont get all the stats at once.

It's really up to preference to what your team needs. Expert Belt can also bluff a choice item set while retaining the ability to switch moves.

The most popular and lethal Mence set is a Scarfed Moxie one. He's best used late game after you've cleared away faster checks and steels, then you can ram on through with Outrages.

What are some good Defensive Pokemon, because I need some better ones other than my Rhyperior and Empoleon qq

I'm thinking of getting a Torkoal and a Reuniclus.

I already have a Ferrothorn, bt I'm gonna need more than just one reliable defensive Pokemon :L

Torkoal is bad in standard, Reuniclus is mainly for offensive stuff.  And we'll need a lot more information about the team before suggesting a random wall since we'll need to know if it fits in the synergy.  Or you can just slap in a Chansey.

When you decide on defensive pokemon for your team, don't just think of the single pokemon itself, but the role it can play on your team, and effective combinations with other pokemon.

For instance, take both Amoonguss and Slowbro, both of them cover most of each others weaknesses (the impotant ones anyway), and an abundance of status moves between them, and they both have Regenerator to maintain momentum in battle. Throw in a Heatran in the mix and you'll have a very potent Fire/Water/Grass core to your team that can be tough to break through.

Starmie is a reliable spinner, and pretty fast with nice coverage.

Last slot, Volcarona if you are using choiced Haxorus. If you are using DD Haxorus, use a fast choiced mon, like Infernape, Mence, or Latios.

I don't wanna risk doubling up on a Dragon Type, so I'll go with Infernape. And I'll give Starmie a try too.

There is literally no risk with doubling up on dragons.  There are teams called DragMag teams where the entire team are just Dragons and a Magnezone to defeat the steel types who threaten the dragons.  Then the dragons just sweep without being stopped xD

The only big problem for double dragon teams is Mamoswine, who's becoming a lot more popular with Thick Fat, he does have Superpower for Pory2 and Ferrothorn, but Conkeldurr deals with him well.

Onix is terribad. I should stop him there, he should only be LC.
Though, if he is, he could go with a Sassy Nature, with 252 Hp/252 Sp.D/4 Atk.

Yes you should bother. the difference between 0 IVs and 31 Ivs is 31 stats which is a lot. It can make the difference between a KO or getting KO'd. I'm not saying that you have to have them perfect, but at least try to get the 22+ (so that its less than 10 stats different). Though I would recomend getting 30+ in speed as going first will make a huge difference. To be honest, its not hard to IV breed. It was made really easy since HGSS. All you need is a power item (depending on what IV you want to pass on. For exampe, the power item for speed, give it to the parent and the speed IV is passed down) and a Ditto with perfect IVs (you can find them online or if I can get a clone, I can give you one). A Ditto with 31 IVS across will allow you to pick one to pass down (with the corresponding power item). Also, 3 random, additional IVs are passed down from the parents (not each, but together. For example, one parent might pass down 3 and the other none or one might pass down 2 and the other 1). Hope this helps

Yes you should bother. the difference between 0 IVs and 31 Ivs is 31 stats which is a lot. It can make the difference between a KO or getting KO'd. I'm not saying that you have to have them perfect, but at least try to get the 22+ (so that its less than 10 stats different). Yeah, it did help, thank you. Also, I heard that it can be easier... or easy-ish to get some Ditto from the Giant Chasm and get the perfect IVs there, but is that true? And if so, shoudl I jsut use an IV calculator to make sure?

You can't just catch a pokemon and have it with 31 IVs across every time. Everything is determined as the battle starts and the IVs will be random. Sure there is a chance of 31 IVs, just like the time when I took up chaining for shinies and found a shiny on my second battle encounter but that was extremely unlikely. Like I said before, just look online for one. Thats what I did. :)
