Title: PPN Archive Thread
Post by: klondikebar on October 12, 2012, 02:41:10 pm
Due to the site going off for several hours a few times over the last couple of days, I decided that to be safe, I would download a text archive of the entire site. So, here is a thread to tell me anything you want archived and stored here so that we don't lose it forever if the site does die.

Completed
------------------------

RP and FanFiction Board - DOWNLOAD TEXT ARCHIVE (http://www.mediafire.com/?a7kd3ucqjbc3icq)
Social
Competitive Battling

Currently Downloading
------------------------

Sprite, Fanart and Fan Creations

Queued
---------

Pokemon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum

Once the text archive is finished, I'll start the tedious process of downloading the ENITRE SITE, including links, images, etc. The only thing we won't get is account sign in.

I think larger topics of high importance should be done next.  Such as The Silent Room and the ToT.

Yup, will be doing those next. I can't do topics at a time however, only boards. So, I'll add social to the queue.

Maybe, but they take up a LOT of time. I'll see about it though.

This is now active again! PPN is back up, so I'm gonna see if we can grab everything, then I'll work on getting an archival site set up :D

Would WGET work for this?

Potentially? If you're willing to give it a go, if there's a way to exclude certain url extensions, you could try and just get one board.

I never used nor have i even tried WGET, I just about it cuz stallman uses it exclusively to browse the intertubes, and it's open source.

Why would you exclude certain url extensions?

I didn't mean extensions, I forgot what it is... not a subdomain, but... something idk...

Just so you could test to see if it works by only DLing one board instead of all of it.

what do you mean then? ._.

why wouldnt you want to download all of it?

You don't need the ToT nor the Spam Board. It would just take unnecessary space.

I'm saying, if you wanted to TEST to see if wget would download it all correctly, then you should try limiting it to downloading one board. Then if it works, download the rest.

Note: The archive site will not function exactly the same as PPN, and will look a little... basic... but once in the actual threads, the theme goes back to PPN and everything works fine.

Ignoring what I posted above, I'm using a different, MUCH better program for this now. It allows me to make a 1:1 clone of the site. We still probably won't be able to sign in, however, it will work EXACTLY LIKE PPN besides that, meaning it's very easy to host (which I will hopefully be able to do for us all :D).

Meaning, the download is finished :D

I'm gonna need to manually add CSS though... as it didn't do that. I should be able to find a way to add the code I need into all the files at once hopefully.

For now, rejoice in the fact that PPN is safe forever :D

I've RARed the files and am putting them into my dropbox.

What if Dropbox closes?

What if Dropbox closes?
What if the world ended?
What if we all forgot about Evionet, PPN?
What if the human race was to be transformed into cockroaches?
What if an EMP busted all electronic equipment on Earth?
...
What if's help the cause in nothing ^^.
Dropbox + Sato's computer are already covering 99.99% of the problem. Now if an act of evil fate decides we need to lose that forever, and decides at the same time that TimF stops paying for PPN to be up, well then it means the entire world is against us.

Added the styles! The site is now exactly like PPN sans the ability to log in :D

Only reason it didn't have the styles was because the program I was using (httrack) didn't download them. All is good now :D

Yeah, sorry.

I guess a more accurate description would be, the files themselves are pretty much ready, I just need to get it online.
